My Stage 4 Breast Cancer Journey:
A Fight for Life and Hope
In May 2021, my life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer of the breast. I had no idea that I was seriously ill until this devastating diagnosis. My specific diagnosis is PR and HER2 negative breast cancer, ER positive, with additional lesions found in my lungs, lymph nodes, and right rib. Recently, after a PET scan on August 2, 2024, I was diagnosed with new hepatic metastasis, which is secondary liver cancer. At 46 years old, I'm also facing another health challenge—detached retinas in both of my eyes.
My Plan of Action
Despite these hurdles, I’m not giving up. I’m planning to give chemotherapy another shot, this time with a different drug recommended by my amazing Oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK). My previous experience with chemotherapy did show promise in slowing down the cancer's growth, but the side effects were unbearable. This time, I’m hoping the new drug will be kinder to my body. I will use the funds raised through this GoFundMe campaign to explore innovative treatment options that my insurance doesn’t cover, after this final attempt at chemotherapy.
A Little About Me
I’m the daughter of Naa'na Salima Dunn and Umar Abdul-Fattaah, and the sister of Kalima Abdur-Rahman, Kaba Abdul-Fattaah, and Khabira Abdullah. Before my cancer diagnosis and vision challenges, I worked in the field of architecture for over 20 years as a Project Architect and Freelance Architectural Drafter. I’m passionate about creating affordable housing, and some of my research design images can be viewed on my GoFundMe page using the link below. I also have over 10 years of experience working as a Property Manager. Currently, I’m on disability and managing a very tight budget.
